Description of the Workshop

This workshop provides participants with a practical, end-to-end understanding of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using JMP® software. Delivered across two hands-on sessions of 2.5 hours each, it takes participants from uncovering latent structure in their data, through validating measurement instruments and establishing the reliability and validity of constructs, to estimating structural path models with mediation and moderation effects. Every topic is worked through in JMP with real data sets, so that participants leave able to specify, estimate and interpret theory-driven models in their own research and professional work.

Session 1 (2.5 hours):

Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA): examining correlation structure, factor extraction, deciding the number of factors, rotation and interpretation of loadings.

Introduction to SEM: latent variables and observed indicators, measurement versus structural models, path diagram conventions

Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA): specifying and estimating measurement models, model fit indices (CFI, TLI, RMSEA, SRMR), model refinement and comparison.

Reliability and Validity of Constructs: composite reliability, average variance extracted, convergent and discriminant validity.

Cases with Hands-on Exercises

Session 2 (2.5 hours):

Building Path Models: specifying structural relationships among constructs, estimation, assessing model fit and comparing competing models.

Direct, indirect and total effects in the structural model.

Mediation: simple and multiple mediation, testing indirect effects, bootstrap confidence intervals.

Moderation: interaction effects, moderated paths

Resources for learning, Discussions and wrap up.

Software Requirement: All sessions are hands-on. Participants are requested to download and install JMP Student Edition (JMP SE) on their laptops ahead of the workshop and to confirm that the software launches successfully. JMP Student Edition is available at no cost to students, instructors and academic researchers, and includes the Structural Equation Models platform used throughout the workshop. Data tables for the exercises will be shared with participants.
